How It Works

The Driver Behaviour Leaderboard processes trip data to generate a daily driver safety score. Metrics include:

• Speed compliance – Proportion of the trip spent within legal speed bands.
• Event-based behaviours – Harsh braking, cornering, or acceleration.

The algorithm weighs speeding more heavily than other events, as it’s an objective safety measure. This ensures fairness, especially when harsh braking or cornering may be defensive rather than reckless.

Driver Identification & Trip Allocation

Accurate scoring relies on identifying the right driver. Blackhawk.io uses a three-tier system:

1. Driver ID (PIN or RFID) – Required before the vehicle can be used.
2. Pool Booking Integration – Trips automatically assigned to the user who booked the vehicle.
3. Static Assignment – Dedicated vehicles can be permanently linked to a driver.

This ensures that every trip is attributed fairly and transparently.

Scoring Methodology

• Short trips under 200m excluded.
• Daily score is distance-weighted so longer trips matter more.
• Speeding severity bands (1–9km/h, 10–19km/h, 20+km/h over limit) apply proportional penalties.
• Scores translate into a simple five-star rating system for quick visibility.

Drivers with no trips in a period (e.g., holidays) are not scored.
